Providence-New Bedford, Rhode Island / Massachusetts

Providence is the state capital of the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island. The city is located about an hour south of Boston, with Connecticut to the west and Cape Cod to the east. Providence has a population of 190,000 making it the third most populous city in New England, behind Boston and Worcester. It is one of America’s oldest cities and used to have a large manufacturing base, but is now more rooted in a service economy as well as health care and education. Companies located in Providence include United National Foods, Textron and Citizens Bank. Providence has the second largest deepwater seaport in New England, that services cargo, shipping and oil tankers. The city is home to a number of colleges and universities including the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College and Rhode Island College. Brown is the city’s top employer. The historic city of Newport, home to Gilded Age mansions, is nearby. Newport is a place for tourism in the summer with the Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival bringing travelers to the area. Newport is also home to a U.S. Naval Base. Providence is served by T.F. Green Airport located in Warwick, RI.
